Geothermal Heating
Here you can find out about Geothermal Heating, how it work, what equipment is needed as well as much more information.
What is Geothermal Heating?
Geothermal Heating is an electrically powered system that extracts naturally stored heat in the ground to warm your home. The system can also be used to heat your water, outdoor swimming pool and also to cool your home in the summer months.
How does it work?
Geothermal Heating works in much the same way that your home refrigerator does. If you were to place your hand behind the fridge, you would feel heat being given off. This heat is being moved from the inside of the fridge to the outside to create a cool environment. Geothermal Heating in essence is this process in reverse. It takes heat from the ground and brings it to your home.
What is a Heat Pump?
A Heat Pump is the device that converts the low temperature heat energy from the ground to high temperature heat energy for use around the home. It is similar in size to a boiler, but it does not require a fuel to heat water. It merely moves heat that already exists. Because of this a Heat Pump is three to four times more efficient than an ordinary boiler.
How is the heat transferred to my home?
The heat is transferred to your house via a series of tubes which are buried in trenches up to 2 metres in depth. In the event of your property not being large enough then a bore hole can be drilled (up to 90m deep) to allow for the pipes to be installed.
Once the tubes are installed, water is passed around the system and heat is absorbed from the ground. It is then taken to the Heat Pump where the heat is extracted and transferred to your existing heating circuit.
How is heat distributed around my home?
Your existing plumbing (radiators, under floor heating) can be used to distribute the heat from the Heat Pump around your home. At an additional cost a comfort cooling system can also be installed for use in the summer months.
