A Ground Source Heat Pump is a great idea for saving money and saving the planet. It may not quite offset China, but we can’t sit back waiting for everyone else to do their bit, might as well start at home.
It’s true that the dig-up for the ground loop is pretty serious, but the rest is simple, provided that you have a heating engineer who knows what they are doing. Bruce has done work for me for twelve years, and over that time I have always been impressed with his way of thinking up solutions to problems. When it came to the heat-pump, he had the simple, practical, genius idea of putting some of the indoor pipe-work outside, in a ground-level chamber – thus saving space and mess. His installation is so beautiful to look at that I haven’t even boxed it in; it should be in Tate Modern.
The whole thing is sleek, efficient and space-conscious, so don’t be put off by awful photos of miles of pipe-work and submarine-style valves. If Bruce fits it – you’re fine.
Does it work? Some people are spooked by the fact that their radiators never get red-hot; they don’t, because they don’t need to. The rooms are warm and comfortable, you set the temperature, and as long as you don’t want to live in the Sahara, a heat-pump is great.
My system was kick-started in winter, but after running for 117 days it had cost me the vast sum of £120 for all my heating and hot water. This is a 3 bedroom, 2 storey cottage. Not bad.
It’s quiet, it’s economical, and it will pay for itself. The only thing to remember is that you need large radiators and plenty of insulation in your house. The best insulation is Thermafleece, which has the advantage of supporting British hill farmers, and uses only 14% of the energy consumed in the manufacture of that revolting mineral wool. Look up Thermafleece on the Web for best prices.
I can recommend the system, and I can recommend Bruce Eastabrook – much better to use someone who can get the thing right straight away, and who has a real interest in the product; this isn’t just a boiler or just a heating system; it’s a commitment to doing things differently, and that is what Bruce is really good at.
